The Cockapoo is a first degree hybrid, unlike presumptions of many that it is a purebred. First degree means that it is the direct result of cross breeding a Poodle and a Cocker Spaniel. In Australia, they call this breed Spoodles and in Sweden, it is called Cockerpoo.

The Cockapoo has been around since 1950 and was in fact first conceived in the United States. Since then, it has grown in popularity all over the world and is considered as one of the premier breeds to be adopted as a toy dog or miniature dog. There are currently several Cockapoo clubs around the world and there are three existing ones in the US.

To have a Cockapoo, crossbreeding should be done between a Poodle and Cocker Spaniel or between a Cockapoo and another Cockapoo. Breeders around the world today are so keen in making this breed stable that experiments in Cockapoo breeding are ongoing down to its next generation offspring. Cockapoo clubs wants every Cockapoo breeders to list down all the information and details of their experiments so that they may have a basis in creating the breed standard in the future.

It is normal for hybrids to possess an unstable characteristic in terms of appearance and temperament. For the Cockapoo, some may sometimes look like a Poodle or some may look like a spaniel. There is no specific height or weight for Cockapoos because breeders tend to use different sizes of Poodles as there are toy poodles and miniature poodles.

The Cockapoo also comes in different shades of colors such as beige, tan, red or brown. There are some which appear in solid colors like black, white, cream, red, and silver. Most of this breed, however, comes out with a mixture of colors and complex markings on their coats such as patches and freckles on the snout, legs, face and back.

The coat of the Cockapoo also varies depending on which parent it inherited it from. Some may have sleek hair just like the spaniel while some may have curlier and coarser hair like the Poodle. Thanks to the influence of the Poodle, most Cockapoos have low-shedding coats and produces less dander, therefore making it safer for allergic people.

Despite being adorable and small, the Cockapoos are famous for their agility and tireless energy. They are smart, cheerful and affectionate and they got this from the Cocker Spaniel’s side. This breed is also very friendly and their playfulness is perfect for little children.
