Easy Ways to Stop Dogs Whining
Dogs whine for any number of reasons. In order to effectively solve the problem, you first need to know the core reason of the whining.
One of the main reasons for whining is because your dog is lonely and needs some attention. Whining is the way your dog will likely convey this message to you. She may simply need some more love and affection. Alternatively, you dog may be whining because she’s not feeling well, if you suspect this to be the case, get him to a vet as quickly as possible.
Your dog may also whine due to the fact that you are not at home, in this case she may be experiencing anxiety about you being away. The best way to cure this is by slowly getting your dog used to the fact that your leaving does not mean you will not be back. You may try leaving the dog for much shorter periods such as 5 or 10 minutes. This gets them used to the fact that just because you left, it is no big deal, you will return shortly.
When using this method to teach your dog that you will always return, ensure you make no big deal about leaving or returning. Don’t get too excited when you return, only start giving your dog attention after you’ve been home for ten minutes or so. This way your dog learns that leaving is no big deal, and in fact, it’s a normal occurrence.
Once you have practiced this method with your dog and he can tolerate being alone for ten minutes or so, start to increase this time in 5 minute slots until you are away for an hour or more. You dog will slowly learn that you coming and going is normal behaviour and it won’t be as difficult for him.
Another approach to stop your dog whining is to using negative reinforcement. This method is rather controversial however as it involves ignoring your dog which can be dangerous if he has a real problem. Firstly, tell your dog in a firm way to stop whining. If your dog doesn’t stop, start making some loud unpleasant noise that your dog will associate with the whining. In time your dog will learn that whining is unpleasant and will stop.
Even if your dog’s whining is driving you crazy, never resort to physical punishment. Abuse is not an effective form of training and it’s also against the law. It can have many harmful effects on your dog, more than just the pain of the abuse. The best way to get lasting results when training your dog is to treat it with love and firm but fair respect.
