To bite is only taught when a proxy but cooperating ?stranger? has protective clothing on, and I think the average car and dog owner will be satisfied with a barking dog in a car. Training to bite is a risky undertaking, but can be helpful if you live in a dangerous area.

When my friend wants to train his dog he uses bones, because his dog loves bones. If my friend’s dog’s bone cracks she drops it and won’t touch it again, until she has it examined for safety. If your dog doesn’t examine bones for safety I recommend checking them yourself, as an oversight can be deathly to your dog.

As I give a retrieval training object to my dog I use an excited tone of voice as if it were the greatest treat to be allowed to retrieve dumb-bells. This type of training begins with the dog on the lead at the ’sit’.

Gently open the dog’s mouth by inserting your finger into the side of the mouth where there are no teeth, immediately behind the large canine tooth. Always keep your hand on top of the dog’s nose, not trying to pull down the bottom jaw.

Don’t push the dumb-bell or other object back into the dog’s mouth. Instead balance it behind the canine teeth, and allow the dog to close its mouth on it.

This must be said with so much vehemence that the dog is egged on to such a state of excitement that he naturally barks. Directly he does so, praise him, and repeat this as often as is necessary for the dog to get to know that guarding is his job.

Dogs’ nerves can be soothed merely by communicating to your dog what is to be expected. Look into your yorkie’s eyes and tell them in a soothing voice that they have done well if they have pleased you.

Dogs are so much happier when they know what their owner expects. Yorkies especially are so happy if they know the rules and how to please an owner. Yorkies love to follow rules, especially if learning and/or enforcing the rules is turned into a game.
