Secrets to Stop Dogs Begging
There are times, when you and your family are enjoying dinner with guests, and just as the food is being served, your dog climbs up on the guests or whines until someone give him what he wants. This behavior can be both embarrassing and irritating for both you and your guests.
You will need to do something about this behavior, because this will only become worse as it goes along.
Training your dog not to beg is not going to be an easy task. Chances are your dog has been whining with success for a long time and has that behavior firmly instilled in his character. In the past when you have given your dog food after it has begged for it, you have taught him that begging and whining gets results. You now need to apply some technical training regimes in order to break that behavior.
The first step in training you dog that whining is not acceptable is to remove your dog from your presence. During meal time put your dog outside or in some other room where you remain out of sight. This will begin to teach your dog that he is not involved in the dining process.
When you put him out during meal times, for a while he will come and beg at the windows and beg when you have food in your hand, however you will need to be consistent and be sure not to ever feed him from the table. Also stay away from giving him human food at all.
If you do give in, you’ll have to start this training process again.
Another way that you can help you dog to stop begging is by simply feeding him at the same time that you feed the family. It gives him something else to do besides begging at the table and lets him focus his attention on his own food instead of yours. By doing this you let him feel like part of the family as well because he is also eating. If you don’t want him to eat at the same time, stick to removing him from the situation and giving him a rawhide bone to keep him busy.
The key thing to remember when training your dog not to beg is that under no circumstances should your dog be allowed to eat from your table. If you have children, make sure they understand this. Any time you give in to the begging just reinforces that the whining is effective. Never give in to the begging.
