Dog teeth cleaning is something which should become a daily part of your routine of caring for your pet. Just like us, dogs can develop tooth disease; making it very important to make sure that you care for your pet’s health by keeping their teeth clean and tartar free.

Dental Disease and Your Dog’s Health

Diseases of the mouth, teeth, and gums can be very painful for your pooch and because they aren’t able to tell us when they have a toothache, as pet owners we must be diligent in keeping up with our dog’s dental care. If left untreated, a tooth infection may develop into serious complication for your dog and affect vital organs such as their heart, liver, or kidneys.

Your dog’s diet definitely has a direct effect on their dental health. Choosing foods and treats that are fortified and designed to keep their teeth and gums healthy are an easy way to implement dental hygiene into your dog’s life. Although professional cleaning by a veterinarian is an option, this should only be considered in extreme cases as unnecessarily having your dog anesthetized is not only expensive, but it also puts undue stress on your pet.

Getting Started with Dog Teeth Cleaning

Even if your dog is no longer a puppy you can train them to accept having their teeth brushed with some patience and perseverance. Both dogs and puppies alike can be acclimated to having the toothbrush in their mouths simply by starting out using your finger and a dab of peanut butter.

Your dog will lick your finger – this will let you start rubbing their teeth and gums. Be sure to offer plenty of praise while you do this. Soon, your dog will be used to this and you can move on to a finger wrapped in gauze. Rub the teeth and gums in a circular motion, just as you would with a toothbrush. When your pet becomes accustomed to this, you’re ready to move in to the real thing.

Don’t use toothpaste made for people – this will give your dog an upset stomach. Use dog toothpaste instead; these are designed to be appealing to dogs. Let your dog lick some off of the brush, then add more and start brushing.

You’ll need to lift up your dogs’ gums to be able to reach their upper teeth -the canines especially. To get the best results, hold the brush at a 45 degree angle; this lets you clean teeth and gums simultaneously. Use a circular motion and pay special attention to your pets’ back teeth, which are especially subject to tooth disease.

Make dog teeth cleaning a happy occasion for your dog. Keep low key to prevent your dog from getting too excited to hold still. You should only need abut a minute to get your dogs’ teeth clean and make sure that they stay healthy and happy.

The art of persuasion is a good skill to develop when dog training. Your voice is the most important aspect of this skill. It’s important to use your dog’s name before each command, and to use a persuasive tone of voice. Keep your tone of voice low and pleasant, but also firm.

Talk constantly to your dog when dog training. When training your dog to retrieve, you’ll need to persuade him to take an item from you. Great dog training aids for this are very light dumbbells. As soon as your dog starts to take the dumbbell, immediately praise him with a happy and excited voice. And don’t forget to pet him as well.

Don’t ever use an angry tone of voice when dog training. Getting angry with your dog will defeat the purpose of getting your dog to comply with your wishes. It will cause your dog to become anxious and possibly confused.

Always remember that your dog is trying to please you. This is the case even when he is not following your commands. Your dog may not understand what you want of him. He is not being deliberately disobedient.

As soon as your dog understands what you want him to do, he will take great delight in, e.g. taking the dumbbell from you. In fact, you’ll probably find that your dog will be happy to retrieve the dumbbell from you again and again.

If your dog does not understand that you want him to take the dumbbell (or whichever other dog training aids you’re using), it may be necessary to gently place the dumbbell in his mouth and then gently hold his jaws closed by placing both your hands around his muzzle. Be careful not to bang your dog’s teeth on the dumbbell.

Dog training sessions are a great opportunity for you to spend some quality time with yoru dog. Yes, dog training takes time and effort. It sometimes takes considerable patience. But always bear in mind that dog training should be a fun time for your and your dog.

Once you have placed the dumbbell in your dog’s mouth several times, encourage your dog to take the dumbbell from your hand himself.

Once your dog is taking the dumbbell from your hand, encourage him to pick it up off the ground just in front of him. Then move the dumbbell gradually further and further away from him, and give him the command of “Fetch”.

No Sticking Their Heads Out The Window: Although most pets will take great enjoyment from spending the entire road trip with their head out the window, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris from the road not to mention other cars. Along this same tip, I hope that it should go without mention that traveling with your pet in the back of the pickup truck is also a definite no-no! Some states even have laws restricting this type of animal transport because it is always dangerous.

Stop Frequently: You should take frequent stops to let your pet walk around for a few minutes and use the bathroom. Most rest stops and travel assistance areas will have specific areas for you to take your pet. Always pickup after your pet and try to stay in the designated “pet zone” when walking your pet. Always keep your pet on a lease and make sure that they have proper identification on their collar whenever they are outside of the car.

Give Them Plenty Of Water: At each rest stop make sure to have some water available for your pet to drink from. Sometimes car travel will upset your pets stomach and this will give it something to help prevent sickness. Something that a lot of people recommend is to take ice cubes on road-trips as they’re a fun way for your pet to get their needed re-hydration and it doesn’t take up as much room as bringing lots of water will.

No Feeding Your Pets Fast Food: It’s a safe bet to refrain from feeding your pets anything extra on long road trips. Just stick to their regular amount of food at their regular feeding time. Try to refrain from letting them eat any leftovers from your own meals, especially if they’re from a fast-food restaurant. Greasy food and pets aren’t a good mix.

Don’t Leave Them Alone In The Car: Don’t leave your pets alone in your car while you run errands. On summer days the inside of your car can easily reach 120 degrees in minutes, even if you have the windows cracked open. Pet thieves also have been known to prey on pets left alone in cars at rest stops, so prevent their attempts by keeping your pets at your side.

Don’t Let Them Run Around The Car: Always keep your pet safely restrained while in your car. Using a pet safety-harness or travel dog kennel are the safest ways to keep your pets restrained and out of harms way. These will not only keep your pet from injury, but they also prevent your pet from distracting you while you are driving. A pet safety harness works just like a regular seatbelt. Let your pet wear the harness for a while before you go on your first road trip. This will get them familiar with the harness and you’ll be able to adjust it for optimal comfort. If your dog prefers a travel kennel, make sure that it has amble ventilation. If you have a large car or SUV, you might want to consider using a vehicle barrier. Always remember that the passenger seat is the last place your pet should ever be sitting while your car is moving.

Comfortable and Secure: The number one thing to focus on should be your pets comfort. If your pet is comfortable then the ride will go smoothly. Their comfort is as important as your own. Imagine having to drive on a long-trip sitting in a seat that hurts or is uncomfortable. It’d make for a pretty un-fun trip! Same goes for your pet. An easy trick to put your pet at ease is to bring along their favorite toy or blanket.

Utilizing a wireless pet fence to keep your pet safely within the yard is not only easy to set up, but it is also a safer alternative to traditional fences. Some feel that these types of fences are not safe for the dog and that it could cause serious damage to them over time. Even better is that these kinds of fences also do not do any type of long-term damage, and they do not especially hurt for more than one second.

by Clementine Jacobs

A wireless pet fence is actually is actually more effective at keeping your beloved pets within your yard, and hence safe from outside dangers. than other fence types. You may think that these kinds of fences may be harmful to the dog if used for a long time, or even if used only once. However, if you take the time to train your dog to avoid the fence boundaries then they will keep away from them altogether. Even better is that wireless fences do not do any long term damage because of the small amount of electricity they use, making them completely safe.

So many people feel that these fences are not safe because of the jolt of electricity that is sent to your dog when they get too close to the system’s wire. These are not actually fences, but really wires that are electrically charged. They are run underneath the ground around your home. Your dog must wear a special collar with a receiver to make the wireless pet fence effective: when the collar gets near the wire, they are jolted. Often two or three times of experiencing this jolt is enough to deter your pooch from getting too close to the outside of the yard, but he or she will still require some training from you to really get the gist of it.

These types of fences are also affordably priced in the low hundreds, which means they are far more affordable than standard fences. To install, you need to dig around the outer diameter of your lawn and lay the wire underground. Many people mark where the wires are with marks so that you and your dog can take notice of where it is later on. It is very easy and takes almost no time at all.

While caging your dog up in your yard may seem like it is going against their nature, it is necessary to ensure their safety. Holding your pup on a leash can also be painful and actually keeps them from doing any physical activity. Dogs are never happy to be tied to a tree or a post. They want to have free range of where they live and play, and you can give them that to a point.

You should not be worried about your dog’s safety or comfort with this type of fence. While training may be difficult and it seems cruel at first, but they will learn to live with the fence over time and be happy to stay within its boundaries. A wireless pet fence is a great way to both give your dog some space to run in, and to give you some peace of mind that they will not be escaping anytime soon. They are happy to be able to run around, and you will be happy enough to know that they will not be in any sort of danger after you set up the fence.

by Kevin Eckstein

Pets and pet owners can enjoy the benefits that are associated with dog training. There are a number of techniques that can be utilized in training the dogs so that they become obedient. All dogs should be taught the most essential trait which is obedience as this makes it easy for the owner of the pet to have control over the pet. This reduces the likelihood of the dog engaging in severe situations and assists in preventing the dog from being involved in severe accidents. By commanding the pet to stay close to the owner especially when some dangerous situation is seen to be developing, ensures that the dog is not involved in any serious incident.

The practice of dog training is normally a pleasurable event to the pet dogs and the owners of the pets as well. The fundamental commands used in training the pets such as sit, stay and come are essential and the dogs can learn them through utilization of the simple methods for pet training. The training of pets’ exercises creates an immediate bond between the owners of the pets and the pets themselves. This is due to the fact that the two share an interaction that is harmonious and both work well together during the training. All the above are achieved by adopting the methods considered to be appropriate in training dogs.

Pet dogs that bark excessively at other pets as well as people can be quite a nuisance to neighbors and pet owners as well. Barking excessively can on occasion escalate into instances in which the dog becomes aggressive plus it may also cause the dog to attack if it becomes anxious or excited. Through using proper techniques for pet training, one can ensure that their pet dogs do not bark unnecessarily at other people and pets.

When training the pets, make sure positive techniques of corroboration are used and that the pets are offered rewards after they accomplish a particular task that they are required to perform. Techniques that have punishment attached to them are being viewed as unfashionable in addition to being cruel. A lot of pet trainers are promoting the application of the theory of dominance in training the dogs; nonetheless, methods that use positive corroboration are increasingly gaining reputation in addition to being recognized to be methods that can unlikely cause aggressive behavior in dogs.

The use of positive methods of reinforcement in dog training plus modification of behavior may be quite helpful in taking care of pets that are suffering from separation induced behavior disorders. In nature, dogs are subservient to their masters and obey all the commands they are given. There are some cases where the dog can be difficult to handle, prompting harsh action from their masters to make them submissive once again. Always keep in mind that training of the dogs while they are still very young guarantees better results than when they are older. Training should cover the dog’s behavior both indoors and outdoors.

Having a dog that barks and whines incessantly can put strain on even the most loving relationship between a dog and her owner not to mention the complaints and problems that can arise from your neighbors. Now, some barking will happen even with the best behaved dog, but those who have lived with a dog that barks in excess have a few tips on what to do.

1. Listen to your dog. It is not whining without a reason and instead of trying to get the dog to shut up, you will do well to find out what the problem is. Perhaps someone has attempted to enter the yard and your dog is chomping at the bit to get out and mark its territory. Maybe it spotted an animal, lacks food or water, or maybe a hurtful little spur got tangled in its fur. Check on the animal to make sure all its needs are met and then work outward and see if there is something external that might be causing the whining.

2. is your dog whining rather than barking? Whining is a sign that your dog is in distress and you need to check that your dog is OK.

3. If you have been out all day, your dog may whine because it has been lonely. Since dogs are pack animals and thrive on social interaction, this is a normal response to being alone and while you might not be in the mood for catching up with your dog after a long day at work, your dog needs to have that time. Fail to offer it to the dog, and it will let you know of its unhappiness by whining. Set aside 10 minutes to interact and play with your dog when you come home and culminate in filling its food bowl, and the odds are good that you can stop your dog’s whining in its tracks.

4. Keeping a dog outside by itself is another way to get it to whine. It wants to come in misses the human companionship which is associated with the inside of the house, and will therefore stand by the backdoor and whine until you decide to open the door. This may take 10 minutes or 10 hours, depending on your work schedule. Dogs are persistent and your neighbors may also be when they ask you to put your dog inside the house before you leave next time.

Attempting to discipline a distressed dog is rarely a good idea although a dog that incessantly whines even after all of its needs are met will benefit from a stern “no” that is immediately followed with eye contact and a turning over onto the back in a submissive position. Do not hit your dog or simply put it outside as this will not solve the problem but actually make the behavior a lot worse.

When it comes to the need for medical attention, your pooch is like a human. As a puppy, he needed vaccinations and frequent check-ups. When he became an adult, routine exams were still important, but could be performed less frequently. As he grows older, his need for ongoing veterinary care becomes greater. His health – and by extension, his happiness – is heavily dependent upon the prevention of diseases, and early treatment in the event they are diagnosed.

Because canines are living longer, it is more important than ever for owners to arrange for their veterinary care. Below, we’ll provide a brief overview of the types of services and examinations older pooches need from their veterinarians.

Weight Control And Nutrition Advice

Weight and nutrition play key roles in your canine’s long-term health. One of the most prevalent conditions that have afflicted dogs over the last ten years is obesity. Left unchecked, it can lead to joint pain and long-term health issues.

Your veterinarian can help design a meal and exercise program that will help you control your pooch’s weight while making sure he receives the vitamins and nutrients he needs. If necessary, the vet can recommend supplements to compensate for any nutritional deficiencies.

Medical History And Physical Examination

A key to effective veterinary care is to start a medical history on your dog as soon as possible. That way, the vet can track symptoms and identify the onset of any health-related problems.

Periodic physical exams are an integral part of compiling this history. Normally, adult canines should undergo a full examination once per year. As your pooch grows older, your veterinarian may suggest he undergo exams twice or even three times per year. This is especially true if your dog suffers any serious health conditions that require regular monitoring.

Other Types Of Exams

Your vet will examine your canine’s teeth, gums, and mouth during the course of a routine physical examination. This can help prevent gum disease and other dental issues. If your pooch is unaccustomed to having his mouth opened by someone, he may need to be sedated.

Another important examination that your veterinarian will perform is a rectal exam. This too, is a regular component of the physical exam. The vet will take a look at your dog’s colon and prostate (in the case of a male). The lymph nodes and urinary tract should also be examined.

As canines age, they become more susceptible to problems that inflict their eyes. For example, they can develop cataracts and glaucoma. Your veterinarian will want to examine your pooch’s eyes in order to identify such issues early – before they can cause permanent vision impairment.

There are several additional services that your vet may want to perform to help ensure the long-term health of your dog. These might include treatment for parasites and heartworms, urinalysis, thyroid testing, blood pressure testing, and a complete blood count. In the end, trust the veterinarian and follow his or her recommendations. By doing so, you’ll help your four-legged friend live a long and happy life.

In the fall of 2000 my wife and I went to Florida to see if we wanted to live there. While I was there I started working as a Night Mgr./M’aitre D at a hotel in Palm Beach. I worked nights so my wife was lonely and decided she needed a pet. She did this without my knowing. You can imagine my surprise waking up one morning and hearing barking. I said to myself that doesn’t sound like Cydne (my wife).

Cyd had adopted a springer/dalmatian mix although she looked like a springer. She didn’t take to me at all and I sensed that she didn’t like males. Upon further discussion I found out that Gabrielle (that’s what she named her) was on the streets for a year and half by herself. During that time somebody threw something at her maybe a rock or stick and broke one of her ankles. I imagine she knocked over a few trash cans in her day looking for food and probably angered one of the trash men. Hence the injury.

After six months which brought us to April of 2001 we went back to Maine. Of course Gabby went with us. Gabby was Cyd’s constant companion. She was like her shadow no matter where she went. We understood Palm Beach and realized it was not for us. Christmas without snow was not what we were used too. Also, we were happy we brought Gabby with us and had nine fantastic years with her.

Even though I controlled the food it took Gabby a long time to take to me. No matter how famished she became Cydne was always her best friend. I came in a bad second.

Gabby gave her love unconditionally and I find that pets are pretty much the same in that respect. Wouldn’t it be great if we all started loving unconditionally? What a world it would be. no homeless, no hunger, no wars, etc. I also believe pet owners spoil there pets rotten.

In July of this year Gabby developed a cough and we took her to the vet and they didn’t know what it was. She developed hind leg problems too. However, I was a distributor for a Network Marketing company and they had a supplement for animals that help increase your own stem cells up to 30%. This helped her hind leg problem tremendously and the cough subsided.

In early November the cough became unbearable for Gabby. We thought she might have cancer and we had a decision to make. This was a very tough decision for us and we waited too long only thinking of ourselves. I guess we couldn’t bear the idea of putting her to sleep.

She is at peace now. Gabrielle is gone. She used to dream quite often and they say if you dream you have a soul. Believing in reincarnation I hope she comes back as a teacher and show people how to “Love Unconditionally.” Everything would be so easy to do with love. Be of service to your fellow man.

My loss for Gabby cannot be described. I had nobody to walk me this morning or to help me eat my breakfast. Left to my own I didn’t do very well. Can we all make a decision to give unconditional love a chance and help other people? Network Marketing is a good vehicle to do just that. Are you ready?

To your committed success,

One of the most stressful decisions to make after bringing a puppy home is choosing a dog obedience school. Good training early can make the difference between a happy, healthy relationship with your dog and a lifelong struggle with behavioral issues. When choosing a school, be sure to pick one that is in line with your own natural style of training, as much of the instruction is geared toward humans as well as their dogs. The first few weeks with a new dog are crucial to the bonding process, and a good dog obedience school will lay a foundation you will build upon for years to come.

You should begin your hunt for the right school by speaking to fellow dog owners and veterinarians. The local dog park is a great place to solicit recommendations regarding schools and trainers. Your veterinarian’s office or the local clinic is another great source of information. Your vet’s office may have an official recommendation, but you should also ask the staff for their personal experiences with trainers in the area. In cities or towns with a large population of dog owners, online discussion boards may be the best way of reaching people.

After you have narrowed down the possibilities to a few schools, schedule visits. Most will allow prospective clients to come in and speak to the trainers. Use this time to get a sense of their training methods and whether or not you would feel comfortable continuing this style of training at home. Talk to them about their average class size and take a walk through the grounds. You and your dog will be spending hours there, so it is important that you feel comfortable.

Dogs of different breeds and ages respond differently to training. Most puppies will thrive in a group setting, and enrolling them in a class with peers can help in the socialization process. Trainers are available who will work with dogs individually, and this type of class may be necessary for older dogs, those with a history of behavioral problems, or certain breed that are typically not as responsive to training as others.

Cost may also be a factor in deciding which type of class is feasible for your dog. The average dog obedience school cost differs greatly based on the area in which you live. A series of group lessons can cost anywhere from $40-$200 depending on your area and the reputation of the trainer. Individual hour-long classes typically begin at $25 with prices extending past the $100 mark. Training is important, and if the cost of dog obedience school in your area is prohibitive, you should speak to local non-profit animal welfare agencies and inquire about taking classes for a reduced rate.

After you have selected a school and are preparing for your first class, an owner should know what to expect. The typical curriculum at a good dog obedience school will teach housebreaking for young puppies, and basic commands like “Sit” and “Stay.” Few teach tricks, especially those geared toward younger dogs, but they will help teach you the communication skills to continue training at home. Dog obedience school can be the first step to establishing trust between dogs and people, which is so important in the end.

There are a lot of reasons why you should be sure your pet is wearing a pet id tag, and just as many options to consider in getting a customized pet id tag.

by Andrea Smith

There are a lot of reasons why you should be sure your pet is wearing a pet id tag, and just as many options to consider in getting a customized pet id tag.

There is no end to the variety you will find in materials used in making pet id tags. You can get your tags in aluminum, stainless steel, brass, plastic, or pretty much any other material you can think of. Always be sure to have at bare minimum your pet’s name, address, rabies vaccination information, phone number, and any special medical or dietary information. pet id tags make great gifts, and whether you are gifting them or getting an id tag for your own pet, be sure to get double sided pet id tags so you have plenty of room for all the important information.

Pet ID tags can be customized, engraved traditionally or with a laser, or sublimated with full color. There are many choices in design and artwork, and you can use stock designs, something you create yourself, or something created by a graphic designer. These make great gifts and a very nice added touch would be to add a personal message on one side of the tag, such as happy Birthday, Seasons Greetings, etc, and all the pertinent pet information on the other side.

Pet ID tags are also available in many different shapes and sizes such as classic round to fun and whimsical flowers and fire hydrants! They may also be embellished with information on one side and reflective stickers, which will help keep your pet safe when walking at night on the opposite side. For the diva pet, pet ID tags even come decorated with colorful rhinestones for a little bit of sparkle and bling!

Pet ID tags are very affordable. They range in price from a couple of dollars up to about ten dollars. The price will depend on the style, size, material, and the amount of information you put on the tag. Pet ID tags are a small investment, but a smart, thoughtful gift idea that is great for any pet owner.
