The Favorite Pet Of The Gentry, The Bull Terrier
The Bull Terrier or English Terrier is a terrier type of dog that originally came from England. In Africa, this breed is called Varkhond, meaning pig dog. This name was derived from the fact that the Bull Terrier’s head and eyes are similar to a pig. Moreover, this breed was popularly used in hunting bush-pigs and warthogs.
This breed can trace its roots from the Bull and Terrier breeds of the 18th century. These Bull and Terriers were born aggressive, unwary and agile in fighting monstrous animals in bull baiting. The sports of bull baiting and bear baiting were famous blood sport during the middle of 18th century; they were so popular that even the royals favor this past time.
In 1830, breeders decided to develop a dog that is more agile and fearless in attacking the gigantic bears and bulls. Crossing the Bulldog, Old English Terrier and Spanish Pointer, the Bull Terrier was born. However, this breed came out as not an excellent fighter inside the arena.
The White Cavalier, which is a white coated variety of the Bull Terrier breed, turned out to be inferior in bull baiting but became a fashionable pet. Soon after, this dog became the favored pet of the blue bloods and was proven to be outstanding as a guard dog, watch dog and ratter. Currently, the Bull Terrier has a miniature size and both of them are alike in terms of disposition.
The Bull Terrier is a stocky and well-proportioned dog. What sets it apart from other Bull and Terrier descendants is its unique head which is often termed as egg-shape. This head is broad and flat at the top and narrows at the end of the nose.
The eyes of this dog are almond-shaped, small, and dark and are placed close to each other. The coat of this dog is short and dense and sticks tight to the body. The coat colors come in black, brindle, pure white, red, fawn and tri-color.
The Bull Terrier is naturally powerful and not very biddable. However, it is very bright, dependable and lively. It is affectionate and loves the companionship of the family and it is also gentle with children.
This breed is very protective of young children especially the female dogs. It is active and rough but also amicable with other dogs and animals. This dog needs a daily dose of exercise in order to keep its body and mind healthy.
