The toy poodle is one of the few fancy-groomed and well-kept breed of dogs. It is often seen in its clipped, styled and fluffy curly hair walking so fabulously. When the name toy poodle is mentioned, one will automatically picture out a cute and amazing little dog.

The toy poodle is a tiny-sized poodle that’s popularly known as a contender on dog shows and dog sports. It excels in the fields of agility, obedience and tracking competitions and believe it or not, in terms of herding, too. The toy poodle is one of the most intelligent dogs therefore, aside from glam, you can expect hard work and persistence from this dog as well.

In general, the poodle breed is a water type of dog and they have an affinity to water and are superb swimmers. During the first centuries of their existence, this breed was used to retrieve shot fowls and other game. Today, they are rarely used for such tasks but instead are used as show dogs and family pets.

There are three size categories of the poodle: standard, miniature and toy. All of these sizes share the same type of hair which is single-coated, curly and low-shedder with textures of soft, coarse and wooly. The colors of the poodle may be anything and the patterns may appear as solid, parti or phantom.

The breed is highly spirited and is prone to boredom that’s why they’re always caught up in a lot of mischief. Towards children, however, they are extremely loving and affectionate and does not back down at meeting new people and new animals. Moreover, the poodle should be allowed lots of playtime since they love to play but make sure to give them plenty of rest afterwards.

The poodles are also great at keeping watch and are quite adaptable to any changes in the surrounding. They are quick to learn and therefore training sessions are very easy. You can potty train the poodles with no or little difficulty wherein other breeds, you will find it difficult.

For over 400 years, the poodle breed had existed through out the regions of Western Europe. France, Germany, Denmark and the ancient Piedmont are the suggested place of its origin. However, it is France who has been officially recognized as the original home of the poodles.

It was the French who discovered and developed different uses for this water dog such as circus performing. The name poodle came from the German word “pudel” meaning the one who always gets wet”. The now endangered French water dog is said to be the ancestor of the poodle and in France, it is called “caniche” meaning duck dog.
