Although dog licking can be considered by some owners a way that the dog gives them love and attention, it can also become an annoyance when other people come into the home and the dog wants to greet them with excessive licking.

Dog licking is not a dangerous behavior, such as jumping up on people when they come into the home, it is still improper dog behavior, and is a habit that can cause embarrassment to the dog’s owner and can prohibit guests from feeling comfortable and welcome in the home.

Here Are Some Tips

One of the most important tips that dog owners should follow from the time the dog is a puppy is that they must be consistent and teach the dog to behave toward them the same way that they will want the dog to behave toward other people.

If the owner allows the dog to jump up on him, the dog will not understand why it is not okay to jump up on other people. If the owner allows the dog to lick his face or hands, the dog will not understand why the owner wants him to stop licking a stranger’s hands or face. Consistency is the key to any dog training, showing what the expected behavior is and then reinforcing it on a consistent basis.

Even though the owner might think it is wonderful that the dog licks him when he comes home, showing excitement and giving the owner attention, there are plenty of other ways that are more appropriate for the dog to show excitement and attention besides licking. One way to stop dog licking is to turn away from the dog every time that he tries to lick the owner.

You are not recommended to give your dog any eye contact. Turn away from him till he stops licking you. You will only attend to your dog when he has calmed down and is not licking you anymore. You can also praise him for the behaving properly. Let say your dog has this tendency to lick your hand, pull your hand away when he is licking your hand and turn away from the dog. Don’t give him any eye contact unless your dog stops licking you.

By reinforcing proper behavior, the dog owner is also training the dog to stop licking when other people come into the home. Since the dog knows that he will not get attention from the owner when he licks him, the dog is not likely to try to lick the people who come into the home.

You can also tell your guests what they can do if the dog starts licking them. This will actually reinforce the same behavior that you as the dog owner is using to stop your dog from licking.
